Words Are Things is the portfolio of Marquita's written works.
“Words are things. You must be careful, careful about calling people out of their names, using racial pejoratives and sexual pejoratives and all that ignorance. Don’t do that. Some day we’ll be able to measure the power of words. I think they are things. They get on the walls. They get in your wallpaper. They get in your rugs, in your upholstery, and your clothes, and finally in to
you.”
-Dr. Maya Angelou
A Brief History
At six years old, I had no idea that words would take me this far. Unknowingly, I picked up a pencil and wrote my first poem. From that moment on, writing became my refuge. The place I would return to when everything was dark. The place I would rejoice in when everything was bright. Writing is my first love. This website is a marriage of sorts. A committal to my love and passion.
On this website you will hear from me, in the form of my thoughts, creations, and musings. I can only wish that you are touched by my writing. I promise you that everything on here is from a place of honesty and authenticity, even the fiction pieces. This website is a love letter to writing. Thank you for joining my journey and for being a witness. You matter.
